Hayes Weston Crapo

After insisting on having a dramatic entrance into the world, we are thrilled to have baby number 4 safe and sound in our arms.  Hayes weighed in a 5 pounds 13 ounces at 3:10 p.m.  October 4 2013.  He was 4 1/2 weeks early and gave us all quite the scare.

After a month of multiple doctors visits, horrible back pain, more contractions than I knew what to do with and instructions to "Be on Couch Rest" we finally got a few answers to why I had been feeling so crummy.  My other three pregnancies were a piece of cake.  Aside from the fact that I was huge each time, I really felt great and continued to do everything that I had been previously doing.  This pregnancy was different from day one.  I never felt quite right, my energy was low, and I cramped a lot in the beginning. I always had a nagging feeling that something was wrong and I worried a lot.  (Something I never did with the others) I told my sister multiple times that I needed to fill my freezer with meals and get my house in order early.

At 32 weeks I began having contractions.  They were weird though because instead of coming and going, they would come and stay like one steady contraction for hours.  They were horribly painful but uncomfortable and worrisome.  The doctor gave me two shots of steroids for the baby's lung development, perscribed me medication to stop the contractions and put me on "couch rest".  The medication made me feel so horrible that when I went in a week later they took me off of it.  It also didn't help to ease the contractions at all.

Things continued the same until 35 1/2 weeks.  I had pretty much done nothing except what was absolutely necessary for three weeks.  On the morning that the baby was born, I just happened to do a little extra housework and all my laundry was caught up.  My kids had been awesome helpers to me and I did very little.  Grandma Crapo called and wanted me to bring the kids over to help her clean out the garden.  ( This is what the little kids do during Spud Harvest so they don't feel so left out.) We had already been there twice that week making doughnuts and letting the kids ride in the truck.  I told her no that we had to go to town and run a few errands.  She was persistant that we 'make a memory" and so I complied.  I didn't really help with the garden, mostly just supervised and then I headed into the house to put some cookies in the oven.  I was sitting at the kitchen bar and stood up to get the cookies out when I felt a warm gush.  Thinking my water had broke I hurried to the bathroom to find blood.  A lot of blood.  I yelled for Kallie who was upstairs, luckily she didn't hear me (it was a terrifying sight) I grabbed a sweatshirt to wrap around myself and went outside to find the other adults that were there.

Within seconds we were flying down the road headed to the hospital.  One sister in law driving, the other on the phone to the doctor, and ambulance.  We met the ambulance at the Salem church where Weston was just pulling in to meet us as well.  The paramedics got an IV going and checked all my vitals which were fine but were unable to find a fetal heartbeat.  I was panicked and sickened. I was sure my baby was dead inside me.  I tried to stay calm knowing that freaking out would only raise my blood pressure and cause more bleeding.  When we pulled into the hospital a team of nurses and anesthesiologists were waiting outside.  Dr. Evans also pulled in right behind us.  The rushed, flustered faces all around me scared me even more and I was in an exam room in seconds.  It took a minute to find a heartbeat, and that minute felt like hours.  Every eye in the room (and there were about ten people) was on the monitor, as soon as a very faint heartbeat came across everyone took a deep breath and relaxed a tiny bit.  I couldn't stop the tears at that point, the relief I felt was indescribable.  I was prepped for surgery within just a couple minutes and was being wheeled out the door.
My dad was there by then and the sick look on his face didn't help my anxiety.  (Let me insert now that right after Hagen was born, my dad called me to tell me that he didn't think I should have any more kids and that three was enough. Even though I laughed about it then and shrugged it off, in the back of my mind I knew he was dead serious and maybe had a point.  That conversation flashed through my mind as they wheeled me past him in the hall)

It was all kind of a blur and the last thing I remember was being strapped to the operating table with a mask shoved against my face that made me feel like I was suffocating.  Within 15 minutes of being at the hospital a screaming baby boy was born and immediately admitted to the NICU. I woke up from surgery in horrible pain, but was relieved to be alive and to know that my boy was going to be okay.  I know it sounds dramatic but from the time I saw all that blood until the time I was being suffocated by that mask, I wasn't sure I was going to live.

With my other c-sections I was given a spinal block which take about 8 hours to wear off, with this being such a rush I was put completely out using general anesthesia.  The problem with that is that when I woke up, I had no pain relief at all.  It was awful and luckily I was able to get a morphine drip pretty quickly, however it took me most of the night to get the pain under control at all.  The doctor came in shortly after I woke up to give me a run down of the surgery.  My placenta had abrupted about 50% which is a lot.  Apparently most babies only survive a 20% abruption, so I was feeling very blessed.  He also told me that my uterus was fused to my bladder which required bladder reconstructive surgery.  He had me all fixed up but then left me with the awful news that I would have to have a cathedar for 10 days.  (That was ten miserable days!) He told me over and over that I was lucky to have made it to the hospital so quickly and to be alive with a baby. This I already knew and a list of blessings a mile long was ticking through my head.  I am so grateful a mother-in-law that insisted on making a memory that day. (And boy did we make one!) I am grateful for two sister-in-laws that calmly took action.  Aside from instructing them to never let Weston marry someone that would be mean to my kids, I didn't say a word the whole way to the hospital.  They completely took charge of the situation and did everything right, including calling the ambulance. I probably would've skipped that step thinking we could get there quicker on our own.  The ambulance saved a lot of time though because they took us right to Labor and Delivery and had a team waiting, whereas we would've went to emergency and it probably would've taken longer.  I am grateful for skilled nurses and doctors that knew exaclty what to do. I am grateful for leather seats and for a lot of family support that has gotten us through the last two weeks.

Flag Football

Cole played flag football this year for the first time.  He was pretty excited about the whole thing.  He was thrilled that Skylar and Bryson Forbush were on his team and that they got real jerseys and mouthguards.  It just so happened that this year they didn't have enough coaches or kids to make a kindergarten and first grade team so he was on a team with 2-4 graders.  I was nervous about this and rightly so.  Some of those kids are BIG! Cole has never had much interest in sports of any kind.  It has all been cows, horses, guns and knives with that boy.  We are trying to help him broaden his horizens and find other interests.

He did great with football, but we are hoping another years growth will give him a boost of confidence.  He was pretty timid, which is strange for him.  I think he was just so young and inexperienced that he wasn't too sure of himself. He did have fun though and continues to improve his game in the backyard with all the neighbor kids.

These were his trusty fans, they brought a cooler of goodies and were set for the games.

Bear World

Cole was dying to go to Bear World for his birthday (not that we didn't already celebrate it for like three days straight) but we never made it.  We took the opportunity to go on Labor Day.  It was a perfectly overcast day and it felt so good to me to not be sweating to death!  We drove through the bears which I have to say is awesome.  The kids loved it and Weston and I enjoyed it as well.

The petting zoo is always fun for the kids to run around like a bunch of crazies and chase all the animals.  They spent a long time watching the ducks and fish.  They wanted to feed them so bad but neither Weston or I had a quarter.  Whoops.

Not to be discouraged our little scramblers were not to prideful to scrounge around until they found some fish food.  Just below the machines in these cracks was a jackpot.  Weston and I stood back and laughed as they dug around in those cracks pulling out as many pieces of fish food as they could.  Each piece of stinky food was like gold in their little paws.  Oh the joys of childhood!

Kallie the "not animal lover" was none too sure about the giant pig, and shyed away from it every time it came near.  (Cole wanted to ride it)

This tiny little fawn was a favorite and it followed Cole all around.

I'm pretty happy to call these cute people mine.  Hagen is trying to do the peace sign like Cole always does for pictures haha!

Of course we had to do the rides, the kids loved that and I luckily was under the weight limit:)

It was a fun family day and we got out of there right at noon when it started raining.  Perfect!

Back to School

"Back to School to prove to my dad that I'm not a fool! I got my lunch packed up, my shoes tied tight, I hope I don't get in a fight! Back to School!"

All credits to Billy Madison for having that song eternally stuck in my head! Every new school year or after any kind of a break, heck even after the weekend I like to sing this song to my kids.  They shriek and cover their ears in annoyance. Let's be honest though, they are totally going to be singing that to their kids someday! I actually found the YouTube video of the song so they could appreciate it a little better because there is no way they are going to be watching that show for many many years! (As much as I love it, it just isn't for young minds!)

Anyway school started back up again and it came so fast.  The kids were excited for a new adventure.  Cole was mostly excited to have three recesses and get to eat lunch at school, Kallie was just stoked to get new clothes.

Kallie is in third grade and has Mrs.Killpack as her teacher.  As usual Kalllie took school shopping very seriously and hated my idea of just doing it all online.  Her and I had our own shopping day and I must say we had a good time. She took full advantage of the fact that she is the only girl and reminded me of that when I thought we had bought enough. I caved, and bought one more outfit.  I'm so soft!

Cole begged me to not make him go to town which I was only too happy to do.  He wanted clothes ordered online and could've cared less what they looked like.  He didn't want to wear new stuff on the first day, just a pair of shorts.  Easy, Easy!

Neither of the kids wanted me to escort them to their classes this year. I tried not to be offended but tagged along anyway.  Maybe it was the nasty exercise clothes I was wearing with my hair in a messy bun on top of my head, but I think they were embarrassed of me!

After we dropped the kids off at school and got our workout done, Hagen escorted me to my dr's appointment where we learned that at 30 weeks pregnant I was gaining weight at the rate of a newborn.  Yikes, we are packing on the pounds people! Hagen was terrified of the doctor and screamed at her to "leave me mommy alone!" That was a little embarrassing, but it was a quick in and out. After running a few errands in town we were back at home in time for Chelsey to drop her kids off and sit on the front steps to wait for the bus to come.

This boy is a crack up, I am really excited for some one on one time with him for the next few months.

The kids came home very happy about their first day.  Kallie LOVES her teacher and described every minute of the day to me in full detail.  I finally, at 8:30 that night told her that she had to be quiet and go to sleep and she could tell me more tomorrow.  She was bursting with excitement and I love that she was so willing to tell me all about it.

Cole was a very different story.  He is such a boy! I asked him a million questions and got mostly yes or no answers from him.  Don't get me wrong, he loved school, just didn't feel the need to tell me about it.  He was much more concerned with having some free time to play outside.

I took the first day of school as a good excuse to make cookies thinking that maybe the kids would want to sit at the kitchen counter, eat cookies, and tell me all about their day.  I envisioned it to be a very special time..... After Cole literally stuffed two cookies in his mouth and followed it down with a glass a milk, he politely asked to be excused to go play and was beyond annoyed that I requested one last picture.  Kallie on the other hand stayed at the counter with me all afternoon, eating far too many cookies and was still there when I fixed dinner.  Chatting all the while.  I'm pretty lucky to have that girl in my home.  As much as I love the boys, I imagine my future could have some lonely spots without a daughter!

Family Bowling

The whole fam went bowling for my dad's birthday.  That is a little overwhelming I tell you.  I think the older I get the more structure I require.  Mass chaos pushes me over the edge in a matter of seconds.  I love my family dearly and we have some great times together, but with twelve grandkids under the age of 11, things get a little chaotic at times.

Those twelve grandkids are so cute and funny though and they sure love each other.  It was nice that most of them didn't need any help bowling and we all just kind of sat back and watched.

Actually maybe Hank is just the overwhelming one! Just kidding he is the one that always makes things fun!
